18-time major winner Roger Federer to miss French Open

18-time major winner Roger Federer has announced that he won’t play in the French Open in order to prolong his career and will instead prepare for Wimbledon.

The 35-year-old, says he made the decision in an attempt to continue playing on the ATP Tour “for many years to come”.

The Swiss legend defied logic to lift his 18th major title at the Australian Open in January after being out of tennis for 6 months.

Federer missed last year’s French Open through injury – the first time he did not compete in Paris since his debut in 1999.

He won the tournament for the only time in 2009 and is a 4-time runner-up.

The French Open begins on May 28th.
