A 190-bed capacity structure for the Bekwai Municipal Hospital in the Ashanti region is rotting away as authorities have since 2013 abandoned it.
No actionable effort has been made to complete the facility, started by the late Prof. Evans Atta Mills in 2010, despite several appeal by the chief and residents of Bekwai.
The abandoned facility has a unique feature of producing oxygen internally for medical use.
On completion, the facility will ease the pressure on the old Bekwai District Hospital and enhance healthcare delivery in and around the Bekwai municipality.
But portions of the ceiling have started falling off.
Weeds have also taken over the entire facility making the place a safe haven for reptiles.Director-General of Ghana Health Services, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, who toured the facility on Monday, told 3news.com funds for completion of the project is awaiting parliamentary approval.
“The necessary funding for the completion of the project has gone through cabinet and Parliament. We are just waiting for parliamentary approval to bring contractors back to site”.
He assured that the abandoned hospital structure will be completed and made operational by the close of the year.“The remaining works should not take more than four to six months to complete the project. We are hopeful the facility will be operational by the close of 2018 or early next year”.
Dr Nsiah-Asare indicated the current state of the Bekwai Municipal Hospital is unable to meet the demand of patrons, thus, the need to quickly complete the new hospital.
