4 suspected armed robbers killed in Upper West Region

Four suspected armed robbers have lost their lives in the past week in separate armed robbery attacks in the Upper West Region.

Three out of the of four were identified as being of Fulani extraction and have been named as Hassan Arieba, 28, Mahamud Jallo, 40, and Wellendi Bari, 38. The fourth robber was identified as Christopher Godwin, 26.

They were lynched by a mob at Nator Banori, a farming community near Nadowli on July 9 this year, while the other, identified as Desmond Danyi, alias Naabu, an alleged notorious criminal, was shot dead by the police near Ullo along the Wa-Tumu highway on July 10.

The three Fulanis were among a group of robbers who broke into the residence of Kweku Dienuma, a 45-year-old businessman, and robbed him of his personal belongings.

Alarm

The businessman, who identified the three in town, raised an alarm and they were pounced on by a mob, beaten mercilessly and were afterwards put on a tricycle and taken to the Nadowli Police Station.

Realising their poor state, the police took them to the Nadowli Government Hospital for treatment, but they were pronounced dead on arrival.

The fourth robber was among a gang of armed robbers who barricaded the Wa-Hain-Tumu highway near Ullo and robbed passengers of their valuable items and cash.

In response to a distress call, the police dispatched two officers to the crime scene on a motorbike.

Not knowing that the bike riders were policemen, the robbers, who were wielding cutlasses and daggers, stopped them and attempted to rob them.

One of the police officers shot one of the robbers, killing him instantly.

Briefing

The Deputy Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Edward Oduro Kwarteng, made these known at a briefing with journalists in Wa.

He said another four suspected robbers escaped into a nearby bush but were arrested and currently in police custody pending further investigations and prosecution.

In another incident, two robbers, wearing face masks, broke into a hostel of the University of Development Studies at Kunfabiela, a suburb of Wa, and robbed the students of their valuables including laptop computers and mobile phones.

He said one of the students, Harry Amankwa, who resisted attack, was slashed with a cutlass on his shoulders but he managed to disarm the robber and likewise gave him a deep cut on his elbow leading later to the robbers arrest.

Crime on rise

Mr Kwarteng said crime was on the rise in the region and cautioned the public to be vigilant and assist the police to arrest suspected criminals.

Meanwhile, there have been five robberies at the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Flats in Wa within the week.

So far, no arrest has been made by the police in this circumstance.
