46 ‘sexy’ Ghana cops still in service – Dery

The 46 personnel of the Ghana Police Service who were accused of sexual misconduct while on a peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, remain part of the security service in spite of the allegations against them, Minister for the Interior, Mr. Ambrose Derry, has said.

According to him, until the investigations are done, the officers will continue to serve as personnel of the Ghana Police Service.

He told parliament on Thursday, 8 November that: “Mr. Speaker, the 46 personnel still remain part of the service”, adding: “These are allegations made against them and investigations are ongoing”.

“I can assure you that the culprits will be brought to book after the investigations”, he said.

The suspects, all part of the Formed Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service, were on 22 February recalled from Wau and confined to a base in Juba after a preliminary investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation.

According to the UN, it received information that the Ghanaian personnel were allegedly engaged in transactional sex, a clear breach of the UN and UNMISS Code of Conduct that prohibits sexual relationships with vulnerable individuals.

Mr. Dery further told parliament that: “These are allegations that we are dealing with and I can assure you that we are reinforcing. Since then, I have engaged the police and I have reiterated the commitment of the police service and the government, and, in consonance with Ghanaian standards, that they do hold Ghana’s flag higher outside.”
