50% toll booth operators are PwDs – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has said his government has ensured that 50 percent of toll booth collectors are People with Disabilities (PwDs).

“We promised, last year, to increase the share of the District Assemblies Common Fund to persons with disabilities from two percent to three percent, and we delivered.

“Effective July last year, the policy of ensuring that 50% of the persons who manage the country’s toll booths are Persons with Disabilities started.

“Nonetheless, we are determined to address the other concerns of Persons living With Disabilities,” the president told parliament when he presented his second State of the Nation Address (SoNA) on Thursday, 8 February.

On January 15, Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said government has increased the share of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) to PWDs from two to three percent.

He made the revelation at the 69th Annual New Year School and Conference in Accra.

The District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) Act 1993, ACT 455, stipulates that a two percent allocation be made to PWDs out of the DACF but that has been increased by one percent, according to Dr Bawumia.

The aim of the DACF for PWDs is to reduce poverty among them, particularly those outside the formal sector of employment, and enhance their social image through dignified labour.
