57-year-old named municipal best farmer for Hohoe

A 57-year -old Joseph Ocloo (Rev) from Gbi-Godenu has emerged the overall Best farmer in the Hohoe Municipality at the 37th National Farmers Day held at Alavanyo -Kpeme. Under the Theme: Planting for food and Job- Consolidating Food Systems in Ghana.

As the best farmer, he received 1- Motor Bike,1- Knapsack sprayer, 3- Cutlasses, ½ carton Herbicide, 1 pair Wallington Boot,1- Organic Liquid Fertilizer and a Certificate.

Rev Joseph Ocloo has been engaged in Piggery, Poultry, Afforestation, Mushroom Production, Snail, Roots and Tubers Cultivation, Vegetables, Consultancy and Training Center and Corporate just to mention a few.

Municipal Chief Executive (M.C.E) for Hohoe, Honorable Daniel Noble Awume said “agriculture is an important part of Ghana’s economy and contributes greatly the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. Ghana’s agriculture is predominantly smallholder, traditional and rain-fed. Our farming systems vary across agro-ecological zones in the Hohoe Municipality, we grow crops such as rice, cocoa, plantain, cocoyam, cassava, maize, yam, and tree crops such as cocoa, oil palm to mention a few “

Hon, Awume said the Hohoe municipality has benefited from the supply of subsidized seeds and fertilizers under the Planting for Food and Job programme. A total of 29,300 fertilizers, 24,100 bags of NPK, 5,200 bags of UREA, 700 bags of compost and 19,200 liters of organic liquid fertilizer were received. In all, a total of 7,960 farmers benefited from these initiatives. Out of which 5,843 were males and 2,117 were females.

Hon Awume appeal that as Christmas is approaching, we should all unit as one people, live for one another and protect one another also to share our happiness with one another not misery.

The Hohoe Municipal Department of Agric Director Mrs. Sandra Ofori said rice is the leading proud crop in the municipality. She said due to that, maize price is going high in the market, she lamented on how the clement change is affecting maize and vegetables in the municipality.

13 hard working farmers received awards; 6 farmers also received Consolations awards including Lorlornyo fm receiving a certificate as the Best Media Partners in the development agriculture in the municipality.
