708 killed within four months in road accident

Statistics from the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) indicates that a total of 708 people killed while 3,983 got injured in 4,049 road accidents recorded from January to April 30, 2017.

According to the report, 6,468 vehicles were involved while 1,199 pedestrians knocked down by cars and 1,289 Motorcycles were also involve in the accident.

At a media engagement to launch this year’s speed campaign to mark this year’s West Africa Road Safety Organization (WARSO) day and the Global Road Safety, the Executive Director of NRSC, May Obiri Yeboah blame the incessant road accidents  on over speeding and cautioned drivers to reduce their speed to minimize the road accidents.

She also cautioned pedestrians to be extremely careful when crossing roads due to the harmful nature of accidents.

May Obiri Yeboah revealed that the Commission has therefore decided to peg the celebration to the UN Global Road Safety week being driven on the slogan: “Save Lives: #SlowDown” which aimed to increase the understanding of the dangers of speed and generate action on measures to address speed, thereby saving lives on the roads.

Meanwhile, Director of Planning and Programmes at NRSC, Ing. David Osafo Adonteng said as part of its campaign to reduce the deaths, adding that the NRSC in collaboration with it major stakeholders will clamp down on vehicles that are using old car tyres to reduce accidents.

He added that the NRSC will intensify its public education programme in the country to ensure that proper safety regulations adhere to.

Ing. Osafo Adonteng stated that stakeholders are doing a lot in educating and sensitizing the public but much depends on the shoulders of drivers.
