20-year old hunchback participates in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination

Bless is a 20-year old student of Adaklu-Anfoe Junior High School in the Volta region of Ghana. She developed a hunch at her back as a child and she had to grow up with it.In a society where people with physical challenges are often marginalized, Bless did not allow her hunch to deter her from going to school and in this last gap, she is giving out her best to be able to compete with her other colleagues.

In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Bless said her physical challenge greatly affected her movement. She said when the hunch started growing, it affected her social life and education because sometimes the pain in her spine was excruciating so she had to just stay at home.

Movement to and from school was challenge since she did not own a wheelchair. She revealed that anytime she made attempts to stand upright to walk, she felt pain in her back. Her challenge has hindered her education since she had to stop schooling for years and only returned to ensure she is able to study to see her dreams of becoming a nurse come to pass. As a candidate, she is made to lie prostrate on a mattress placed on top of two wooden benches to ease her pain and enable her write her examinations.

According to statistics from the West African Examination Council there are fifty-seven visually-impaired students also writing this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination.
