A/R: Suicide deaths up

Suicide deaths are on the rise in the Ashanti Region, the Regional Director of Health, Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang has announced.

The region recorded eleven suicide deaths in 2018 as compared to seven cases in 2017.

Dr Tenkorang made this known at the 2018 annual performance review meeting of the Ashanti Regional health directorate held in Kumasi.

He said attempted suicide cases also increased from 75 in 2017 to 113 in 2018.

“There was an improvement in mental health, all the districts now have mental health units and the cases reported reduced from 10,200 in 2017 to 9,900 in 2018. The top causes of mental condition were epilepsy and schizophrenia…” said Dr Tenkorang, adding that: “Attempted suicides increased from 75 to 113 and suicide deaths increased from 7 to 11.”
