AMA marks 2 years of June 3 disaster

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has mapped out programmes to mark two years since the June 3 twin fire and flood disaster occurred killing several people in Accra.

The disaster occurred on 3rd June 2015, destroying several properties and lives.

A press statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Numo Blafo III, on Wednesday May 31 said: “The city of Accra was plunged into inconsolable grief which engulfed the whole nation as 159 persons from all walks of life and hailing from the various regions in Ghana were consumed by an inferno at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle on June 3, 2015, when torrential rains caused flooding in Accra.”

Saturday, June 3, 2017 is exactly two years since that incident and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) wishes to bring to the attention of the general public, activities earmarked for that day, to remind us of a commitment it made that “never again” will it allow such an incident to recur.

In view of these, the following activities are outlined for the commemoration of that twin disaster which befell the city on that day:

Friday, June 2, 2017…7:00 AM…..clean-up exercise, Odawna

Friday, June 2, 2017…remembrance service and candle light

Procession from the Ernest Bruce Memorial Methodist Church from 5pm to the disaster site

Saturday, June 3, 2017……9am…remembrance service at the Calvary Baptist Church, Adabraka, followed by wreath-laying ceremony at the disaster site.

In remembering these fallen Ghanaians, the AMA is hereby inviting the general public, surviving victims, and families of all those who lost their lives in that flood-fire tragedy.
