The police command in the Ashanti Region has arrested two suspects who allegedly kidnapped a 14-year-old boy and demanded a ransom of $3,000 from his grandmother.
The suspects are Mannaseh Fumey, 29; a security man and Charles Appiah, 38; unemployed.
Their accomplice, Felix, is currently on the run.
The command’s PRO, ASP Godwin Ahianyo, told the media at a press briefing on Wednesday, 27 March 2019 that on 13 March 2019, the two suspects who live in the same vicinity with the victim and their accomplice, planned to kidnap the teenager for a ransom from his rich granny.
The suspects befriended the victim and exchanged contacts with him after promising to get him a smartphone and a laptop.
On 24 March 2019, ASP Ahianyo said Felix invited the victim to KNUST Junction, apparently for the smartphone and the laptop. They chloroformed him and drove off with him in a waiting Toyota Corolla to Apatrapa, where the victim was kept in a secluded building.
According to the police, after gaining consciousness on 25 March 2019, Felix took the teenager’s grandmother’s phone number and called her for the ransom.
The next day, ASP Ahianyo said the victim, who was tied with a rope and abandoned in the secluded building, managed to cut himself free and shouted for help.
This, he said, drew the attention of a passerby, who informed the Tanoso police leading to his rescue.
Upon hearing that the family of the victim had reported the matter to the Ejisu police command, Manasseh called to tell the police that he overheard his accomplice, Charles Appiah discussing the kidnapping with Felix.
However, investigations revealed that Manasseh was part of the suspects and was immediately picked up after Charles Appiah had been arrested.
