Avoid Chinese electrical cables – NEDCO advises customers

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) on Thursday advised Ghanaians to desist from procuring Chinese electrical cables for power installation and extension.

According Mr Dacuster Anthony Gbadago, Sunyani District Supervisor of NEDCO, the Chinese electrical cables did not have the capacity to withstand the country’s power voltage and using them for power connection could possibly spark fire.

Speaking at a national anti-counterfeit electrical products exposure workshop at Abesim, near Sunyani, Mr Gbadago also expressed concern over the use of sub-standard electricity poles for power supply.

The Communication for Development and Advocacy Consult (CDA consult) in collaboration with the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) is organising the three-day workshop on theme “avoid patronage of counterfeit electrical products”.

In attendance were; representatives from the Ghana Police Service, Immigration Service, National Fire Service as well as dealers, customers and owners of electrical shops and the media.

Mr Gbadago indicated that most often electrical cables imported from China looked cheaper, and every country had its own power voltage which must match with specific cables.

“In Ghana our power voltage is the same as that of the UK and we must always check the type of electrical cables we procure for power installation”, he said.

Mr Francis Ameyibor, the Executive Director of CDA consult, noted that hazards caused by fake electrical products at work places and homes were enormous, hence the need for organising a holistic public education platform to adopt common strategy to combat counterfeit electrical products.
