Bank of Ghana donates white canes to Ghana Blind Union, Hohoe Chapter

The Bank of Ghana (BOG), Hohoe, on Wednesday donated 100 pieces of white canes to the Hohoe chapter of the Ghana Blind Union (GBU) to assist members move about with ease.

Presenting the canes on behalf of the central bank, the bank’s Safety Officer, Dickson Dateh said the BOG has always been interested in the well-being of the visually impaired.

He cited security features on the commemorative five Ghana Cedis note which are sensitive to touch to aid the visually challenged in identifying the denomination as an example.

He rubbished news making rounds on social media that the tartan marks on the note are the mark of the beast.

“Information circulating on social media indicates the marks on the five cedis note are marks of the beast. I will like to say that is not true. Those marks are security features intended to assist the visually impaired identify the note.”

Receiving the canes on behalf of the GBU, the union’s president, Augustine Yaw Asangba expressed gratitude to the central bank for the gesture.

He called on individuals and corporate bodies to assist the union teach its members the right way to use the canes.

“On behalf of my union, I say thank you very much for the gesture and God bless you. You have put smiles on our faces. Another challenge we are facing is that most of our members do not know how to use white canes. We therefore need to teach them. To do that effectively, we will need assistance from individuals and corporate bodies.”

The Volta Regional President of Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD), Elolo Agyei charged people with disabilities to be active in activities that are geared towards nation building.

“Disability is not inability. I am charging people with disabilities to be active in activities that are meant to build the nation,” he said.
