Chiefs, people of Lolobi celebrate first Ipor-Rice Festival

It was a rich display of cultural artistry exhibited by the chiefs and people of Lolobi when they gathered to climax the celebration of their Ipor-Rice Festival.

This year’s festival is the first in the annals of the history of Lolobi since the incorporation of “rice” as part of the festival celebration.

It had been named Ipor Festival since its resurgence in 1999 after the first celebration in 1975 died off, shortly after.

Since then, all efforts by the chiefs and people have been to modify the festival and make it appealing to reflect the ideals and history of Lolobi, hence the inclusion of “rice.”

At a grand durbar at Lolobi Kumasi to climax the celebration on Easter Monday, the Paramount Chief of Lolobi Traditional Area, Nana Akoto Masakyi III stressed the importance of the festival celebration to the people of Lolobi.

He said the festival has over the years become the rallying point for sons and daughters of Lolobi; both home and abroad to reunite and plan for the development of the area.

Nana Masakyi, who sat in state in his colourful regalia bemoaned the how lack of modern technology had resulted in low yield and post harvest losses to Lolobi rice farmers.

He called on government to assist with agricultural extension officers to help farmers with modern technology to get the best out of their farms.

The 2017 Lolobi-Ipor Rice Festival was on the theme: “Enhancing the Development of Lolobi Traditional Area through the Construction of Nurses Quarters for Quality Health Delivery.”

The week-long celebration began with series of activities including; educational seminars on environmental issues, wanton destruction of the forest cover, misapplication of fertilizers by farmers; screening for eye problems and breast cancer, as well as football matches and indoor games.
