Earth Tremor in Accra

An earth tremor hit parts of Accra on Saturday at about 11 pm.
Some residents of McCarthy Hill, Weija, Bortianor, Tetegu, Old Kasoa Barrier, Gbawe, Aplaku, Sowutuom, Awoshie, and even as far as Abelemkpe, Tabora, Achimota, Ablekuma, Kissieman, Westland, Laterbiokorshie and Legon confirmed that they experienced the earth tremor.
The recent occurrence, which is believed to be the fourth in this year alone, is consistent with the forecast by the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) that there is the possibility of a major earthquake along the fault line of Accra.
The traditional fault line, according to scientists, stretches from McCarthy Hill through to the Accra Central where there was a major earthquake in 1939 which led to cracks on buildings from the Police Station to Ministries which used to be called Secretariat.
In early January for instance, the GGSA reported that the earth trembled and measured 2.6 on the Richter Scale.
Last year, the German government provided the GGSA with modern equipment which has primed the authority to do better forecasting of late.
In December last year, the Director-General of the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) Prof. Alex Dodoo, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that Ghana would benefit from stress tests to ensure the integrity of buildings throughout the country.
“The audit of buildings, offices, malls, markets and places of worship and the issuance of a stress certificate to those who pass the test, would enhance confidence in the public,” he said.
