Fifa condemns “horrendous” Ahmed murder

World football governing body, FIFA says it is “extremely disturbed and saddened” to hear the news that a local journalist based in Ghana – Ahmed Hussein-Suale – was shot dead in Accra on Wednesday night.

In an official press statement posted on the FIFA website, the world football body said, “It extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Mr Ahmed Hussein-Suale and very much hopes the perpetrators of this horrendous crime are caught soon by the relevant bodies.”

FIFA also reiterated its support for journalists doing important investigative work, which on many occasions lead to an improvement in governance standards, not only in football but across the board in public life.

Background

Mr Ahmed Hussein-Suale, an undercover journalist who played an instrumental role in the recent exposé in African football, was shot dead on Wednesday while on his way home.

His death has generated uproar in Ghana, especially because in the heat of the exposé last June, a politician with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) called for him to be beaten up.

According to reports, Ahmed who works with controversial undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas was shot in the chest by unidentified men on motorbikes in Madina, a suburb of Accra.

He was a member of Tiger Eye Private Investigations and had investigated corruption in Ghana’s football leagues.

The undercover report on cash gifts led to a lifetime ban for the former head of Ghana’s Football Association.
