Gov’t names 4 for new KNUST c’cil

The government of Ghana has made four nominations as its representatives on the reconstituted Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

They are: Nana Effah Appenteng, a retired diplomat and Omanhene Bompata Traditional Area; Hilda Haggar Ampadu, an alumnus and public health specialist; Steve Anoff Amoaning-Yankson, president of the Ghana Institute of Engineers; and Mr Alex Quaynor, a private legal practitioner.

The nominations come 24 hours after members of the KNUST branches of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) accused the Minister of state in charge of Tertiary Education, Prof Kwesi Yankah, of interfering in the unions’ processes in choosing their representatives on the council.

The new council was to have been reconstituted and launched on Friday, 2 November, but the delay of the government in announcing its nominees stalled the process.

The Chancellor of the university, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been leading the council reconstitution following its dissolution by the government after students of the university rioted and vandalised the campus over certain grievances, which included the assault of 10 of their colleagues and an alumnus by the school’s internal security.
