KMA dismisses 14 city guards over misconduct

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has dismissed 14 city guards for misconducting themselves in the line of duty.

Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), said the dismissal followed thorough investigations into the activities of the culprits after they were cited for various malpractices.

“Some of them were caught on video taking bribes from clients in the line of duty,” he disclosed, saying that, the Assembly would not countenance any action which was in contravention with the law, from its city guards. Mr. Assibey-Antwi, who was addressing a stakeholders’ meeting in Kumasi, said the authorities had put in place effective monitoring systems to detect all malpractices perpetrated by the city guards.

“We are advising the people, especially traders and drivers not to hesitate to report to the KMA issues relating to the demand of bribes by the city guards in the course of their work,” the MCE noted.

The meeting brought together security agencies, traders, technocrats, civil society organizations and representatives of some Departments and Agencies in the metropolis.

It was aimed at highlighting development programmes and action plans by the KMA for 2019, and also seek their support in the implementation of the policies.

Mr. Assibey-Antwi said the Assembly, acting in partnership with the central government, had stepped up measures to put into good shape the road network in the metropolis.

This ties in with the agenda to improving the infrastructure base to allow for investment, which would create the needed jobs and wealth for the people.

The MCE briefed the gathering on the progress made so far under the Assembly’s flagship programme, ‘Keeping Kumasi Clean and Green’, which is being executed to boost the scenic beauty of the metropolis.

The programme, he said, had seen the planting of about 80, 000 trees of mixed species across the suburbs, while a number of dustbins had also been provided to help keep the city clean and also inculcate good sanitary practices in the residents.
