Krobos march over Eastern Uni. campus relocation

Aggrieved youth groups within the Krobo area are expected to march today, Thursday, 9 August 2018 against what they say are attempts by the government to relocate the main campus of the proposed Eastern University of Environment and Sustainable Development from Somanya to Bunso in the East Akim District.

The youth, calling themselves United Krobo Force, argue that during the sod-cutting ceremony of the project by former President John Mahama, he clarified that Somanya would host the main campus while a satellite campus would be sited at Donkorkrom in the Afram Plains.

The angry youth, however, say recent moves by the government suggests there are plans to move the main campus from the area to Bunso.

The group said Thursday’s street protest is to resist the relocation.

Speaking to Class News, a member of the group, Benette Yaovi wondered why Bunso has been earmarked as a place for the construction of the university when the area is not even in the original plan.

He said: “About eleven projects are being taken from the major campus in Somanya to Bunso whereas there’s no Bunso in Act 898 [that is establishing the university]. Now the committee is telling us that their committee report can overturn the Act which we think cannot be done. That is why people of Krobo and the people of the Dangme lands are embarking on this demonstration to express our grievances for the whole world to hear what is happening to us in the region.

“The Donkorkrom one, we know is a satellite campus … Projects likes the auditorium will not go to the satellite campus, library will not go to the satellite campus, the main courses will not go to the satellite campus, even the main administration block will not go to the satellite campus, so, if all these things are going to Bunso, [it is not right]. Bunso is not even in the Act, so, why Bunso?”
