Militia Ban: We’ll not tolerate lip service – NCCE

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has charged the two main political parties in the country to stop the rhetoric and act on disbanding all militia attached to their parties.

Even though the NCCE acknowledged initial steps taken to have a dialogue with the parties together with the National Peace Council (NPC) towards ending party thuggery the commission has called “on all political parties to come to that table in good faith and begin to commit to the process of disbanding party vigilantes in our body politic”.

Chairperson of the NCCE Josephine Nkrumah, who made the comments at the launch of its findings and recommendations for ending political thuggery based on series of stakeholder engagements in Accra on Monday, 8 April 2019, said:” The lip service to the disbandment or to the negative aspect of vigilantism can no longer be tolerated”.

The NCCE engaged the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), parties without representation in parliament, the Ghana Police Service, the Christian Council and national security, among others.

The findings from the stakeholder engagement include mistrust of security institutions by political parties, the winner takes all nature of Ghana’s politics and economic factors such as high unemployment rate which makes the youth vulnerable to political violence.

Based on its findings, the NCCE wants the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons to embark on an exercise to retrieve all illegal weapons in the country.

Ms Nkrumah observed that the country is heading towards a destructive course if the issue of political violence is not solved.
