The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Dayi, Ms Joycelyn Tetteh, was last Thursday honoured by the chiefs and people in her constituency for her contributions to development projects and for being adjudged the Best Young Female Member of Parliament and the Ninth Overall Best MP.

The prestigious title of Mama Edzeame was also conferred on her by the chiefs at the event.

Attendance

In attendance at the ceremony held at Anfoega were former President J.J. Rawlings; the Paramount Chief of Anfoega, Fiaga Togbe Tepre Hodo IV; Mama Alogloe I, the President of the North Dayi Queenmothers Association; the Deputy Minority Chief Whip and MP for Ada, Ms Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, and some other MPs.

Ms Tetteh was adjudged the Best Young Female MP after a nationwide assessment of the performance of MPs by the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Legon.

The citation accompanying the award read: “Prior to offering yourself to be considered for the prestigious office, the sterling qualities that make you stand tall among your peers were already apparent. Although you won the election overwhelmingly on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress, you quickly endeared yourself to all your constituents irrespective of party affiliations.”

It further stated: “You are always on the field, interacting so cordially with all and sundry. Among the chiefs and elders, you carry yourself like a queenmother, among the youth you are a role model, among the women folks you provide succour …and impart positively on your audience anytime.

“Your development projects spreading across the length and breadth of the constituency in the areas of education, health and social progress bear testimony to your hard work. We also follow with keen interest and delight your useful contributions to debates in Parliament.”

Ex-President

Former President J.J. Rawlings commended Ms Tetteh for her selfless services and urged the people in the area to assist her in her efforts to develop the area.

He advised the people to desist from polluting their waters, otherwise a time would come when getting even tilapia in their waters would be a problem.

The paramount chief of Anfoega said Ms Tetteh deserved commendation and urged the people in the area to live above partisan politics.

He said as traditional rulers, they did not engage in party politics but honoured successful people from their area.

Ms Tetteh, who has been in Parliament for barely two and half years, said she was passionate about her community engagement and development, empowering women, children and the vulnerable in society.

She said she had assisted, among other projects, in the construction of an ultra-modern hospital and improvement of telecommunications services at the Aveme, Sabadu, Awate, Wusuta and Bume towns.

She appealed to the government to fix the deplorable road linking North Dayi and South Dayi. “During the recent BECE, I fed more than 700 students who took part in the examination,” Ms Tetteh said.

She said she wanted to make North Dayi a better place and, therefore, urged the indigenes of the area to take education seriously.

Ms Tetteh, a graduate of the University of Ghana, Legon, was a final-year student of the Ghana School of Law when she contested and won the parliamentary primary of the National Democratic Congress to contest the North Dayi Constituency seat in the Volta Region.
