NSS Board, management happy with smooth registration

The Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Mustapha Ussif together with the Governing Board on Wednesday, 8 August 2018 paid a working visit to the National Service Regional Secretariat in the Ashanti Region to monitor activities ongoing at the various registration centres and get firsthand information on the challenges.

The delegation was received by the Ashanti Regional Director of NSS, Mr. Opoku Mensah at the Regional Office.

Unlike previous years where registration exercises have been marred by police and military brutalities at the various centres especially in the Greater Accra Region and Ashanti Region due to overcrowding, this year’s exercise has been largely successful.

The registration process has been fully automated and digitised. The Scheme has introduced a barcode system and the use of barcode scanners to verify the authenticity of documents presented by prospective National Service Personnel during registration.

Speaking to the press Mr Ussif stated that: “We are here to assess the impact of the mechanisms we put in place to make sure we have a successful service registration. Last year’s scandal was headache so management sought to put measures in place to stop such annual occurrences.

“I must say that I’m impressed with what I’m seeing especially with the crowd control system we have put in place where all prospective National Service Personnel have to book an appointment before they arrive at the registration centres. The system determines the number of people who can register for a particular day and that is really helping. For the first time, NSS registration is not in the news for a bad cause. There is sanity in the system now”.

The Board Chairman, Prof. Kofi Osei Akuoko also expressed his excitement about the smooth exercise. He however believed there was more room for improvement.
