Panic in Agogo over renewed tensions with herdsmen

Herdsmen and their cattle are re-emerging in the Asante-Akyem North and Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region.

The conflict between herders and local farmers over the years; has not only led to the destruction of food crops, but also the loss of human lives with some herdsmen have been accused of sexual assault against women in the communities.

Agitations for the removal of nomadic herdsmen from the area got to its peak when a traditional priest of Agogo, Okomfo Kwasi Badu, was shot dead in the bush at Kowereso by a 16-year old cowboy, Aliu Baba in 2016 after Okomfo Kwasi Badu had protested against grazing on his farm by the cattle that were being tended by the teenager, Aliu Baba.

Information gathered by Adom News revealed that, there is tension between the local crop farmers and the herdsmen in the area.

Over the weekend, a security guard of a local farming company was killed by people believed to be herdsmen near Agogo.

Farmers at Nkudwoa in Sekyere Central are also raising red flags over activities of herdsmen in the area due to the destruction of their farms.

“We fear food production could slump again after picking up when the herdsmen were forced out of the area by security agencies last year.”

The Krontihene of Nkudwoa, Kwadwo Fordjour in an interview stated that, theyight be forced to take the laws into their own hands if care is not taken.

“I will entreat the herdsmen to get a place for their cattle if not we will bring military personnel to kill all the cattle.”

However, the District Chief Executive officer of the Sekyere District, Kwadwo Banahene assured the people to exercise restraint as they work to restore calm.

“I will entreat the people to be patient because we are finding means to solve this issue permanently.”
