Pro boxing needs more innovation — Kermah

Mr Anthony Kermah, the Chief Executive Officer of Landmark Promotions, believes there is the need for a paradigm shift in the way boxing is run in Ghana, if it is to come out of its current poor state.

According to Mr Kermah, a veteran boxing promotor, the current state of the sport in Ghana needs a massive revolution of grass-roots engagement, as well as leaders with business acumen to be able to get back to its glorious days.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic ahead of the May 31 congress for the Ghana Boxing Authority elections, Mr Kermah said the time had come when the sport must run as truly professional and not rely on government as if it were an amateur body.

“Judging from the good history of boxing in the country and the current state of the sport, a massive revolution of grass-roots engagement is the only way to salvage the dying discipline.”

“The leadership must acquire the business acumen of creating boxing marketers who would move to the doorstep of  corporate institutions in the country and sell the sport to such business entities instead of waiting and hoping something happens.

“Sakeholders must go out and look for sponsorship, and not rely on promoters and managers who dole out of their ‘short pockets’ to organise bouts which yield only little effects,” he stated.

Mr Kermah expressed the belief that the establishment of a permanent boxing league to groom young talents and create massive awareness of the game to outsiders is another way of growing and developing the sport.

In wishing all the contestants in the election well, Mr Kermah expressed the hope that whoever assumed office would consider a return to the old ways of boxing promotion, where bouts were organised and promoted through syndication.
