Public urged to have their eyes examined regularly

The Head Doctor of the Eye Department of the Hohoe Municipal Hospital, Dr. Paula Sefadzi Nkrumah-Gastey has called on members of the public to visit the eye doctor regularly to have their eyes examined.

The move, she said will help in the early detection of issues with the eye so as to prevent complications.

The optometrist was speaking about diabetes retinopathy which is an eye disease brought about by diabetics on Lorlornyo FM’s Daybreak programme on Wednesday.

She said Diabetes retinopathy which refers to damage to the blood vessels of the retina is the most common cause of vision loss among people with diabetes.

According to Dr. Paula, the condition does not cause noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred, and complications have developed.

She outlined blurred and double vision and difficulty in reading among others as symptoms of the condition, and called on individuals experiencing such signs to seek assistance from a certified eye doctor.

She also advised the public to eat balanced diets and avoid taking in heavy meals at night to reduce their risk of developing diabetes.
