Sandema: Family seeks justice for student killed by police

The family of Abdulai Jidel Nasiru, a student who died from gunshot wounds to the chest during a riot at the Sandema Senior High Technical School, is calling for an immediate comprehensive report detailing the circumstances that led to his death.

The family also wants the identity of the police officer who “unprofessionally fired and killed the boy through a direct shot to his chest”.

The family of the deceased is also demanding the immediate interdiction of both the police officer who fired the shot and the Sandema District Police Commander who deployed the police officer to the school compound.

The family is equally calling on human rights activists to entreat the Ghana Police Service and the judiciary to cause the arrest and prosecution of the police officers who misconducted themselves in their line of duty, since, according to them, “No one is above the law”.

The spokesperson for the family of the deceased, Mr Mamudu Adams, made the demands at a news conference at Paga in the Upper East Region, the hometown of the deceased, on Monday, 16 September 2019.

Nasiru died on 16 July 2019 during the riot that erupted between the school’s cadet corps and some of the students when the cadet tried to enforce some rules on campus.

The police had earlier indicated that they fired “rubber bullets and tear gas” to control the crowd but an autopsy conducted at the Tamale Teaching Hospital said the 17-year-old student died through gunshot wounds to his chest.
