Dora Kumatey, a final year student of WBM Zion Senior High School at Old Tafo in the Eastern region, is reportedly unable to sit after being severely flogged by two male teachers.

The two teachers named Mr Mark Adom, a Social Studies tutor and Mr Zedah, a Physics tutor punished Dora Kumatey for reporting late after a mid-semester break in the latter part of 2019.

Narrating her ordeal, Dora said she was given six strong strokes of caning for reporting late to school after last year’s mid-semester break. But her colleague, who also reported sometime after the mid-semester break, only had three strokes of caning.

“I had first received three lashes from Mr Adom when Mr Zedah later came to give me three more despite protesting against it and letting him know I had already been caned by Mr Adom. He insisted on caning me for an offence I had already been punished for,” she explained sorrowfully.

Dora suffered bruises on the buttocks after being repeatedly canned and has since been unable to sit to learn or lie flat on her back to sleep. She only lies on her stomach or sideways to sleep.

Sources reveal some teachers in the school prevented her from seeking medical attention contrary to the advise of a nurse who assessed Dora’s buttock bruises.

“After suffering bruises on my buttocks, I reported the incident to my house mistress named Madam Rhoda who called on a nurse friend to come assess me. On her assessment she recommended that I be taken to the hospital for an anti-biotic injection but Madam Rhoda declined,” she said.

With her condition worsening, Dora reported the incident to her father. Her father then took her to a Community Hospital at Akyem Kukurantumi for treatment, but has now been referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua.

Dr Charles Debrah, a medical doctor at the Community Hospital where Dora was first admitted in an interview confirmed the bruises on Dora’s buttocks adding she was in so much pains.

“Dora reported to the hospital with general body pains, particularly with pains at her buttocks, she could not sit and still cannot sit without experiencing excruciating pains,” he said.

“But with the medical treatment she is receiving, her condition will soon improve,” he added.

Headmaster of the school, Mr Richard Anafi, also confirmed the incident.

The Ghana Education Service frowns on the use of canes as a means of punishing or disciplining students and has proposed alternative ways to disciplining or punishing students.

The Abuakwa South directorate of the Ghana Education Service, when contacted about the incident denied having any knowledge about it and requested for time to investigate the incident.
