The government of Burundi, East Africa has ordered all unmarried couples in the country to get married. Unmarried couples in Burundi have been given until the end of 2017 to legalise their relationships. The government order is meant to bring good morals in the country and end illegal marriages, polygamy, bigamy and prevent hundreds of schoolgirls getting pregnant.
The government of Burundi has shocked its citizens after declaring that all unmarried couples in the country should marry or face legal action. The order issued by the Interior ministry on Friday, May 27, is aimed to instill good morals to the society.
According to Interior ministry spokesman Terence Ntahiraja, the order is set to curb illegal marriages, polygamy, bigamy and also prevent hundreds of schoolgirls getting pregnant.
The Burundi government has given all unmarried couples until the end of 2017 to legalise their relationships or face the law. The government said only church and state-sanctioned weddings were the solution to the problems facing the nation.

Early in May, Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza started a campaign to moralise the society in order to bring the country closer to God. Authorities in the tiny East African country have begun organising mass weddings in order to help poor couples get married. Nkurunziza and his wife, are born-again evangelical Christians have been condemned for the order but the government has defended the move claiming it was within the Burundian laws.
