Thursday’s Europa League round-up

Only one of the four Europa League quarter-finals was settled in normal time as Lyon beat Besiktas on penalties to advance to the last four.

Lyon held their nerve in the shootout to emerge 7-6 victors at the Vodafone Arena after the second leg finished 2-1 in favour of Besiktas, to level the aggregate score at 3-3.

Talisca’s brace (27′, 58′) kept the Turkish giants in the tie, with Alexandre Lacazette having earlier restored parity. There were no further goals in the second half or the 30 minutes that followed, bringing the spot-kick lottery.

Anthony Lopes was the hero for Les Gones as he denied both Dusko Tosic and Matej Mitrovic from 12 yards out to secure the French club’s place in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, Ajax survived the dismissal of Joel Veltman to clinch a 4-3 aggregate win against Schalke, who won the second leg 3-2 after extra time at the VELTINS-Arena.

Two goals in the space of three second-half minutes from Leon Goretzka (53′) and Guido Burgstaller (56′) dragged the Royal Blues right back into the tie, and they were handed a massive boost when Veltman received his marching orders in the 80th minute.

Daniel Caligiuri seemingly put the hosts through on 101 minutes, but Peter Bosz’s side turned the game on its head in the closing stages as Nick Viergever (111′) and Amin Younes (120′) struck to complete an unlikely comeback win.

Meanwhile, Celta Vigo booked their place in the penultimate round of the competition after drawing 1-1 with Genk at the Cristal Arena.

Both goals were scored in the second half as Pione Sisto put the Spanish club 4-2 ahead in the tie on 63 minutes, before Leandro Trossard hit back three minutes later to give the hosts hope.

Thursday’s results in full:

Besiktas 2-1 Lyon

Genk 1-1 Celta Vigo

Manchester United 2-1 Anderlecht

Schalke 3-2 Ajax
