TVET to engage pupils on career guidance

The Volta Regional office of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is to engage pupils from selected basic schools on career guidance counselling to assist them make best career choices.
The exercise is to expose youngsters to the prospects of Technical Vocational Education and Training and encourage them to venture into such fields.
Mr Maxwell Quophy Blagodzi, the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, gave the hint at the opening of this year’s Science Technology Mathematics Innovation Education (STMIE) Camp in Kpando on the theme: “Science Technology Mathematics Innovation Education – Equipping the Youth to be Relevant in a Ghana Beyond Aid”.
He said the programme would expose all stakeholders including pupils and the communities to the “cutting-edge” knowledge available on TVET programmes and careers to help support efforts to demystify STMIE programmes towards guaranteeing gainful employment.
Mr Blagodzi noted that though TVET programmes were rewarding it had not been given the necessary push as compared to its academic equivalent and called for support for the initiative.
He said in fulfilling its promise of building the capacity of the youth, the Government had launched the School Entrepreneurship Initiative (SEI) to enhance the entrepreneurial culture of the youth by inculcating in Senior High/Technical students what was needed to start, develop and manage businesses on their own.
Mr Blagodzi said through those initiatives, government hoped to reduce unemployment, grow the local economy and enhance the lots of the citizenry.
At the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Ho Technical University, the Government revealed plans to expand technical and vocational opportunities at both secondary and tertiary levels to strengthen the link between education and industry and empower young people to employ themselves and others.
