U-23 AFCON: Ghana 2-2 South Africa (5-6 penalties) – as it happened

Ghana suffered another penalty heartbreak to miss out on qualification to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. 

Black Meteors failed to take bronze at the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations tournament as they were beaten by South Africa 6-5 on penalties after the game finished 2-2 on Friday. 

This is the second time in four days Ghana failed to win a penalty shootout. The Meteors lost on penalties to Ivory Coast in the semi-final.

Atrocious defending, didn’t deserve a spot in the Olympics. Questions must be asked on the selection process, is it merit or protocol? These defenders can’t be the best we possibly have

The Black Meteors showed incredible fighting spirit in this half. Evans Mensah scored a scorcher in the 50th minute but Kamohelo Mahlatsi brought South Africa back ahead after the half hour mark. Ibrahim Tanko’s men applied pressure in search of the equalizer and were rewarded after Samuel Obeng took advantage of Evans Mensah’s brilliant work in the 85th minute to finish from close range.The match will now be settled on penalties.
