UN Compound in Mali under attack; Ghanaian soldiers on alert

The UN Compound in Timbuktu, Mali where more than 100 Ghanaian soldiers are stationed has been hit by intense rocket attacks, Myjoyonline.com has gathered.

Director of Public Relations at the Ghana Armed Forces Colonel Aggrey Quarshie has confirmed the attack but denied reports Ghanaian soldiers suffered injuries.

However, sources say one Ghanaian soldier sustained minor injuries but has been treated and discharged.

Social media has been flooded with pictures of the attacks with claims that some Ghanaian soldiers have been severely injured.

The pictures show some UN medical staff treating injured soldiers. It is not clear the nationality of the injured soldiers.

But Col Quarshie says they are not Ghanaians. He cannot immediately confirm who are behind the attacks but said an attack on soldiers in a UN facility where there is no combat is worrying.

“No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Once a UN facility is attacked, the whole world has been attacked,” he stated.

On Wednesday reports suggested the compound was under severe multiple rocket attacks from the desert of Timbuktu.

Ghanaian soldiers as well as other soldiers on peace keeping mission there were saved by a miracle, Myjoyonline.com has learnt.

It is not clear why the UN compound is under attack.
