Some Alumnus of the University of Education – Winneba, have condemned the strike action declared by the University of Education-Winneba branch of the University Teachers Association (UTAG).
According to the group , “Concerned Alumni Association of the University of Education” the action of the UTAG will stampede progress of the university.
The court case, they explain, when concluded will put the university on a sound footing for take off as finality will be brought on all petty squabbles and other negative issues which hinder sound teaching , learning and administrative work .
The group accuse the president of UTAG -UEW , Dr. Ofori Bekoe of declaring the said strike to safe guard his interest due to his close association with the current administration of the university.
They again accuse him of doing little to advance the cause of the very group that he represents as a lot of lecturers do not even have a decent place to sit to work thereby resorting to the boot of their cars as offices .
Speaking in an interview with Starr News ,Central regional Correspondent Kwaku Baah-Acheamfour , the Spokesperson of the group, James Kofi Annan, indicated further that they have been forced to come out because the current executives of the Alumni Association have failed in their duty to the old students who stand affected by the court decision.
The President of the Alumni Association, Emmanuel Sarpong, said he is protecting his job as he is a head of department and lecturer at the same university thereby remaining unconcerned about the frustration of the Alumni of the university and even the fate of the current students .
James Kofi Annan explains that the group has conducted thorough investigation into the very issue at court and are convinced that the plaintiffs are working in the supreme interest of the university and the Winneba community in general and must be commended and not subjected to condemnation.
He therefore called on all alumni to support the court action as the resolution of the court will not only purge the university of all unhealthy practices including corrupt acts but will also breed unity at all fronts necessary for the university to progress.
He added that their investigations revealed that a lot of the staff at the university; both teaching and non-teaching are not happy about activities at the university but are afraid to talk fearing intimidation by the powers that be .
He finally assured the alumni association of the group’s commitment in working to ensure that students both past and present do not suffer irreparable damages as a result of the court action.
